How often do you actually play with your dog? Really play? Simply throwing a ball from a chucker is getting the dog nice and tired but YOU are not getting involved. Play requires team effort .On top of getting the dog some exercise you will also be out enjoying the fresh air and creating that friendship that will encourage your dog to respond better to you nd want to be more loyal.
Play can be done with toys, rough housing,, games like ''find-it'' or even hobbies like agility. All of these build connections between you an your dog.
So for dogs that are young, fit and able under the age of 6/7 and no diagnosed arthritis or hip/shoulder issues then a good hours play session every other day will do your dog wonders. For those aged older than 6/7yrs old or have joint issues then reduce the time you play with your dog to a maximum of 30minutes. Every other day or once a week.
There are certain types of toys that I wouldn’t recommend such as the ball chuckers as they can encourage a multitude of joint issues. Starting from “wrists” shoulders, spinal, hips, hocks, “knees”. running full pelt towards the ball and stopping quickly and turning is all bad for the dogs joints and surrounding muscles and tissue. The same thing can be said for the hobby sport Flyball.
So what is safe?
Playing with your dog in the garden, doing “find it” games.
After playing
After playtime be sure that you give your dog time to cool off and calm themselves down. Dont give anything to eat for at least 20/30mins after a play session.
When playing make sure there is always water available if your dog should need a drink and don’t over do it if the weather is too hot as this could lead to heat exhaustion.
From our CustDog Ball we have now added a whole range of toys suitable for breeds of all sizes and ready for you to get playing with your dog.
Don't forget that playing can be just as exhausting if not more than a simple walk, it is also beneficial to specific muscle groups which will keep your dog more mobile as they grow older.
