Teaching your dog to chill

Updated: Dec 31, 2023

Some dogs struggle to relax in certain situations, like fireworks or high energy social situations. It is these events that require extra work and attention if you’d like your dog not to stress.

Relax

Your dog can sleep between 12-14 hours a day. While this may sound like a lot their ancestral genetic coding tells them to expend energy only when absolutely necessary. Puppies, large breeds and senior dogs will sleep more than adult and younger dogs. It is important to let your dog sleep as that is when the dogs body heals and repairs itself, develops muscles and matures. Teaching your dog to chill

Dogs need a good routine and some boundaries in order to establish a good sleep hygiene. Having a dog that runs riot all day and has little to no basic obedience in or outside the house will struggle to relax in various situations

Teaching a dog to “Chill” or “settle” can be very useful if you are going to a friends house, pub and you want your dog to rest beside you while you enjoy your meal or catch up with your friend.

To start training the “settle” begin sending your dog to a mat/blanket and asking for down and stay. Slowly increase the time leaving them on the mat before rewarding and allowing them up.
